Gardening Tips - August

Britain In Bloom by Sheila Johnson

August will be a very special month in Cayton, as the village will be representing Yorkshire in the national final of the Britain in Bloom competition. We will compete against Kirkby Stephen, Market Bosworth, Upton Upon Severn, Woolton, Falkland and Limpsfield. in the large village category, this is a tremendous honour and comes as a result of winning the Yorkshire in Bloom competition in 2007. The Cayton in Bloom Group have worked tremendously hard throughout the year to make the village shine, but even if you don't belong to the group you can still do your bit to put the village at the top of the floral tree and be crowned Britain in Bloom Gold Medal Winners 2008.

  • Ensure all boundary hedges are trimmed and fronts of properties are clean, tidy and weed-free.
  • Keep your street litter-free. Join in local litter-picks that are organised throughout the year.
  • Sponsor a basket or a trough of flowers.
  • Can you adopt a small area of the village and offer to look after it?
  • Help with fund raising to maintain the Bloom for future years.

Don't forget that In Bloom is not just a one day or one week campaign but a year round project to look after the environment we live in. And, surprisingly, it is not just about baskets of flowers. Britain in Bloom covers environmental issues such as recycling and sustainable planting but most important of all it is about the community and how it has worked together to improve the immediate surroundings.

Results will be announced on September 21 st at an awards evening being held, this year, in Perth, Scotland. So after all the hard work, raise a glass to a fantastic achievement in getting the National Final, look forward to a very exciting future for the village and, above all else, enjoy!
